Steering for the trucks and Jeeps that came before.
How the steering works on 1972-1993 Dodge D and W trucks, the first Power Rams, Ramchargers and the Jeep XJ, YJ, TJ, ZJ, WJ and JK. Which linkage you have, what the box is doing, and how to plan a swap without guessing at parts.

Most solid-axle Mopar and Jeep fronts use one of a few layouts. Get down at the front axle, find the rod that comes off the steering box's pitman arm (the drag link), and follow where it lands.
| Drag link lands on… | Tie rod runs… | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| The passenger knuckle | Driver knuckle to the drag link | Inverted-Y (Haltenberger): XJ, TJ |
| The tie rod | Knuckle to knuckle | Inverted-T: YJ |
| The opposite knuckle | Knuckle to knuckle | Crossover (often aftermarket) |

03What this guide is for
There's plenty online about late-model Ram steering. There's much less, in one place, for the trucks before that: the square-body Dodge D and W series, the first Rams and Ramchargers, and the Jeeps people still build. This guide covers how those systems are laid out and how to plan changes. It sticks to layouts and methods, so it doesn't publish part numbers, torque values or alignment specs. Those belong to your service manual and your parts maker.
Driving a 1994-or-newer Ram 2500/3500? Death wobble, components and lifted-truck geometry for those trucks are covered on our sister site, Dodge Ram Steering.
04From the Dodge Off Road shop
Dodge Off Road's current catalog is built for 1994-and-newer Ram trucks, and nothing it lists today is made specifically for a 1st-gen (1989-1993) truck. Two ways in for classic Dodge owners:
- Swaps: run 2nd-gen (1994-2002) axles under a 1st-gen and DOR's long arms, steering and track bars work with modification. Do a 2nd-gen frame swap and basically all of DOR's 2nd Gen parts work. See 2nd-gen axle and frame swaps.
- Shackle flip: the 2nd gen shackle flip kit can work on a 1st-gen truck. DOR has built 1st-gen crossover steering and shackle flips in the past. To ask about anything 1st-gen, contact the store; availability isn't guaranteed.
